Clemson University Lyceum Scholars Program

Dear Homeschooler,

The demand for the traditional liberal arts education that the Lyceum Scholars Program at Clemson University offers has been extraordinary.  It’s clear that students have a desire to study the kinds of ideas and institutions that are are disappearing from college campuses.  In an effort to extend the Lyceum learning experience to high school students, we are excited to announce a week-long Lyceum Summer Program as part of the Summer Scholars at Clemson University.  Our summer session, 'Leadership and the Case for Greatness', takes directly from the Lyceum Curriculum the question of what role virtue and prudence play in the development of great leaders.

Students will explore leadership, prudence, and greatness through an examination of political thought and historical figures.  For example, students will study Lincoln’s greatest speeches and ask: was he great because he was a prudent statesman or was he was a prudent statesman because he was great?  Lyceum professors will guide students through the interplay between greatness and ambition, principles and political contexts, and leadership and education. These sessions are ideal for students interested in politics, history, ethics and for those who wish to serve their communities.

In this course, students will:
  • Learn to engage with each other in a Socratic style seminar with an emphasis on developing civil discourse.
  • Study history, political science, ethics, rhetoric and philosophy through primary sources, speeches, histories, literature and visual media
  • Improve critical thinking and public speaking skills and practice reading texts closely and carefully
Students will have a complete on-campus experience by staying in Clemson residences and eating in the dining halls.  Afternoons include free time which can be spent exploring campus or meeting a representative from Admissions or Calhoun Honors College.  Evenings feature many of the recreational activities Clemson students enjoy, including bowling at The Underground, swimming at Fike Recreation Center, and a cookout on the beach at beautiful Lake Hartnell.

For more information about Lyceum’s ‘Leadership and the Case for Greatness', please contact Dr. Marjorie Jeffrey at mljeffr@clemson.edu.

Register today!  The early bird deadline is April 1.

Looking for Face to Face Homeschool Options in Georgia?

There are many online options to support homeschooling but what about some good ole fashion face to face options?  While EPIC Homeschool Network offers field trips and enrichment activities, we do not offer formal classes (right now).  So if you find yourself needing some face to face Georgia homeschool academy options, we have compiled a simple list below.  If we missed one, please let us know in the comments and we will update the list.  Our favorite pick is Inspire Homeschool Academy, to learn more about other options, click here.
